Naturopathy, also referred to as naturopathic medicine, is an alternative medical system born of holistic Asian philosophies as well as 19th century European medical approaches. It draws from many disciplines and traditions, including:

  • Herbs and dietary supplements
  • Homeopathy
  • Dietary and lifestyle changes
  • Stress reduction
  • Exercise therapy
  • Manipulative therapies
  • Detoxification
  • Psychotherapy and counseling

Naturopathy is used effectively to treat every aspect of health, including:

  • Primary care
  • Disease treatment
  • Overall well-being

Education and Licenses Required to Be a Naturopath There are three basic types of naturopaths for which three different levels of education and licensure are required:

Naturopathic Physicians

This level of naturopathy requires a 4-year graduate-level degree from a Council on Naturopathic Medical Education-accredited North American naturopathic medical school. License requirement varies by state.

Traditional Naturopath

The designation of “naturopath” has less stringent requirements. Training may vary and may not necessarily come from accredited organizations. Traditional naturopaths also are often not eligible to receive a license, although many are very skilled at what they do. Always check referrals and client testimonials.

Naturopathy as an Add-On Treatment

Traditionally-trained health care providers like physicians, chiropractors, nurses and dentists, and nurses may also offer naturopathic treatments, holistic therapies and functional medicine after receiving classes in these areas. Training programs can vary widely.

Benefits of Naturopathy

The benefits of naturopathic medicine are numerous and far-reaching. Receiving naturopathic treatment and care can help with:

  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Pain relief
  • Managing and healing chronic illnesses
  • Faster recovery from cold and flu
  • Nutritional support for fitness
  • Reaching and maintaining ideal weight
  • Slowing degenerative diseases
  • Increased energy levels
  • Reduction of stress
  • Improved mood and emotional balance

One of the things patients love most about naturopathic medicine is that it treats the body holistically, as an integrated system. Treatments favor natural, herbal remedies, organic foods and supplements, integrated therapeutic modalities and a balance in physical, emotional and spiritual areas.
